HOUSTON — The apartment complex where Teresa Eddins now lives is so quiet that “you can hear a pin drop” at night, she says — a stark contrast to the constant noise she withstood while living beneath a bridge two years ago.She was one of the first people who moved into a former hotel in Houston that served as a center to help homeless people navigate their way to more stability. She credits the transitional housing facility and programs launched as part of “The Way Home,” the large Texas city’s nationally recognized homelessness-reduction strategy, for the fact that she now lives in an apartment she loves, alongside her adopted dog, Violet. It’s also where she decided to tackle her alcoholism, getting sober.“You don’t ever want to be in those shoes under a bridge — going through a hurricane, going through the cold, going through the winds, going through hot weather, you name it,” recalled Eddins, 63, of her life in 2021, wh...49ers-Seahawks pregame: Geno Smith’s status in doubt; Niners do Knapp Stair Climb Challenge

SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Geno Smith gingerly went through a 10-minute workout some three hours before kickoff today to determine whether he’ll start for the Seattle Seahawks against the 49ers.Smith sustained a groin injury in Thursday’s practice and was listed as questionable, prompting the Seahawks to add Sean Mannion to the 53-man roster as an option with Drew Lock behind Smith.Smith methodically worked on his pocket movement with occasional passes during his workout. If he plays, expect him to work out of the shotgun formation and unload quick passes rather than test his mobility with zone-read runs.Geno Smith went through a 10-minute workout, lot of communication between throws with training staff, looked very ginger, walked off favoring right leg/groinIf he starts for Seahawks vs 49ers, expect lot of shotgun snaps, no zone read, and lot of Nick Bosa & Co. crashing pocket— Cam Inman (@CamInman) December 10, 2023Smith is only three weeks removed from ...Driver arrested after a three-county chase across the Bay Bridge

What are they and what could they mean?

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is taking a more active role in Senate negotiations over changes to the immigration system that Republicans are demanding in exchange for providing money to Ukraine in its fight against Russia and Israel for the war with Hamas. The Democratic president has said he is willing to make “significant compromises on the border” as Republicans block the wartime aid in Congress. The White House is expected to get more involved in talks this week as the impasse over changes to border policy has deepened and the funds remaining for Ukraine have dwindled.“It’s time to cut a deal that both sides can agree to,” Biden’s budget director, Shalanda Young, said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”Republicans say the record numbers of migrants crossing the southern border pose a security threat because authorities cannot adequately screen all the migrants and that those who enter the United States are straining the country’s resources.
