McManus: Get ready to add criminal trials to Trump campaign chaos

McManus: Get ready to add criminal trials to Trump campaign chaos The calendar for the 2024 presidential campaign just became a lot more complicated. Not the primary calendar. The trial calendar.Last week, former President Donald Trump was arraigned in Manhattan on felony charges stemming from a hush money payment to a porn star.Given the Dickensian pace of court proceedings in New York, Trump’s trial won’t begin until next year, right in the middle of the election campaign. His lawyers are expected to file motions challenging the case in August, just in time for the first GOP presidential debate. Those preliminary battles could go all the way to the Supreme Court. That isn’t the only potential train wreck on the horizon.Trump faces three more possible indictments: a Georgia prosecution based on his attempts to reverse that state’s 2020 election result; federal charges over his hoard of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago; and charges stemming from his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, plot to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden...

Opinion: Expelled Tennessee lawmakers demonstrate political bravery

Opinion: Expelled Tennessee lawmakers demonstrate political bravery The churn of local politics rarely makes national news unless the outlet happens to be C-SPAN, but headlines, history and careers were made during proceedings at Tennessee’s State Capitol on Thursday when a GOP supermajority voted to expel two of three Democratic legislators for their participation in a gun control rally. In a brazen act of political retribution, Democratic Reps. Justin Jones, Gloria Johnson and Justin Pearson were accused of “violating decorum rules” for their part in a protest last week on the House floor following a mass shooting at a private school in Nashville where six people — including three 9-year-olds — were slain. Jones and Pearson, who are Black, were expelled by the Republican legislators. Johnson, who is White, was not. And it was all caught on live feeds from the chamber and local news outlets. The vote was stunning, even now, when defying the rule of law is practically a badge of honor among many right-wing leaders. The ousting was so brazen it could h...

Arapahoe County weighs tougher oil, gas regulations ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — On Tuesday, the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners will continue a public hearing to approve or deny a moratorium for up to six months on accepting any applications for a "Use by Special Review" for an oil and gas facility. The hearing has been continued from March 28 after the board cut off public comment after about two hours. Since Colorado Senate Bill 181 was passed in 2019, additional authority has been given to each county government to enhance oil and gas regulations. In response, Arapahoe County has drafted an amendment to its Land Development Code to include oil and gas regulations. The moratorium would pause any new submittals and according to the county, "allow time to develop appropriate amendments to further protect public health, safety, welfare, and the environment."
