Danville’s eagerly awaited, veggie-forward Blossom & Root will open it doors on Aug. 30, offering the Tri-Valley’s first upscale restaurant menu to showcase vegan fare. It’s a move six years in the making, says owner Susan Vergilio, whose daughter inspired their entire family to go vegan. The only problem with that lifestyle change? There weren’t many restaurant options at the time where their family could dine out. So Vergilio, whose background is in chemistry and teaching, set out to change that, learning not only how to create a menu of delicious, high-level dishes — the executive chef is Jen Sopinsky — but how to open and run a restaurant.Blossom & Root is located at 411 Hartz Ave. in downtown Danville. It is the first entirely vegan restaurant in the Tri-Valley area. (Courtesy Cat Fennell.) By Jennifer Gray | CNN MeteorologistOnce a tropical storm strengthens into a hurricane, it earns a category designation on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale: 1 through 5.Knowing about each category can help predict what damage an incoming storm may inflict – and how best to prepare. The categories are defined by wind speed, with a storm of Category 3, 4, or 5 considered a major hurricane. And damage is exponential as wind speed increases, meaning a strong Category 3 storm could do up to 60 times as much damage as a weak Category 1 storm. But it’s not always as simple as ticking up from 1 to 5.Hurricanes carry many risks not adequately conveyed by the wind speed-based scale, including:• Storm surge – when winds push water onto shore – which accounted for about half of hurricane fatalities between 1963 and 2012, according to a 2014 report in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society;• Rainfall-induced flooding and mudslides, which made up about a quarter of such deaths, ...Chip City opens cookie outposts in Bethesda, Arlington; 1st outside of New York area

ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods was the richest guy in golf and played like he didn’t have two nickels to rub together. That’s one of many traits that made him so incomparable.Just don’t get the idea he wasn’t in it for the money.Woods won the first of his 82 titles on the PGA Tour in 1996 at the Las Vegas Invitational. He walked into the press room and glanced at the computer screen of an Associated Press writer who turned and asked him, “Like it?”“I like this,” Woods replied, pointing to the reporter’s reference of his $297,000 winner’s check. Then there was 2002 in Ireland at a World Golf Championship, which offered $1 million to the winner (back when $1 million meant something). Woods opened with a 65 and was asked if he would rather win that week or the following week at the Ryder Cup.“Here this week,” he said. When asked why, Woods smiled and said, “I can think of a million reasons why.” The room erupted in laughter. That seems like chump cha...1 killed in fatal crash between moped, car in Prince George’s Co.
