Stock market today: Asian shares surge after Wall St gains on signs the US jobs market is cooling Stocks were higher in Asia on Monday after Wall Street was boosted by a report that signaled the US jobs market, while still healthy, is showing some signs of cooling. That supported investors’ hopes that the Federal Reserve may soon ease up on its campaign to slow the U.S. economy by raising interest rates.“It appears that global markets are primed to be smitten with the idea of a ‘Nirvana’ Fed tightening outcome, entailing the ‘immaculate dis-inflation’ that does not cause employment pain,” Tan Boon Heng of Mizuho Bank said in a commentary. Fresh stimulus from China’s financial regulators for the beleaguered property sector also supported buying. They have cut down-payment requirements for first and second-time home buyers and lowered rates on existing mortgages, noted Yeap Jun Rong of IG. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index jumped 2.4% to 18,828.91 while the Shanghai Composite index added 1% to 3,166.62. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.6% at 32,899.99.In Seoul, the Kospi edged 0....

Grand Slam tournaments are getting hotter. US Open players and fans may feel that this week NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Murray prepared for the steamy conditions often found at the U.S. Open by simulating the “brutal heat and humidity” in New York this time of year with the help of, well, an actual steam room at his home. The 36-year-old British tennis star set the humidity in there at 70% and spent hours riding a stationary bike nearby with the thermostat cranked up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius), making the air feel as muggy as it does every summer around Flushing Meadows, where the year’s last Grand Slam tournament entered its second week on Monday. “Just to try and help with the heat adaptation,” explained Murray, who claimed the title in New York in 2012 but lost in mild conditions in the second round this time.If the start of competition at the 2023 U.S. Open offered a bit of a reprieve for athletes, ball crews and spectators alike, thanks to highs mostly in the 70s F (20s C) — “It is a little cooler than usual; that’s definitely easier to play in,” Belgian player Eli...

At former Dixie’s on Grand Ave., Kenton House to open with gold leaf bling, art from St. Paul artists As the first residents of the Kenton House — the five stories of new luxury apartments at the site previously occupied by the longstanding Dixie’s on Grand restaurant — began moving in Friday at 695 Grand Ave. in St. Paul, artist Seitu Jones was on hand to oversee the installation of 18 giant aluminum leaves together spanning 95 feet across the building’s exterior. The leaves, painted metallic gold, are a bit of a departure for Grand Avenue, and meant to illustrate that the corridor — known for its mix of residences and boutique-style shops — still has plenty of luster, even at a time when brick-and-mortar retail has lost ground to online shopping.Jones is well aware that some neighboring residents had no desire to see Kenton House rise two stories above adjacent properties, and several stories higher than Dixie’s, the squat eatery it replaced. Debate over the project culminated in a close rezoning vote by the divided St. Paul City Council, w...

Saints’ crazy week ends with eight-run, extra-inning loss Saints manager Toby Gardenhire has talked often about how unpredictable and fluid things can get in Triple-A baseball, particularly in September. The Saints’ 14-6, 10-inning loss to Columbus on Sunday at CHS Field might be the best example of that Gardenhire will ever see, and the Clippers’ eight-run 10th only begins to tell the story. In his own dizzying version of “Who’s on First,” Gardenhire has seen his job become complicated by the need to determine who’s available and who’s not — something he finds himself doing on a daily basis now that the calendar has flipped to September.“Some weeks are crazier than others,” Gardenhire said. “This has been a crazier week than most.”It starts with the two rehab players from the Twins, Byron Buxton and Alex Kirilloff. When can they play, where can play and how much can they play when they do play?Kirilloff, who has not played for the Twins since going on the injured list July 30 due to a right shoulder strain, played seven innings at first bas...

Larson claims NASCAR’s opening playoff race and gets 1st career win at Darlington DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Kyle Larson led the final 55 laps to start his latest NASCAR playoff run with his first career win at the Southern 500 on Sunday night. The 2021 Cup Series champion automatically advances into the round of 12 with the win at Darlington Raceway, no matter how he does in races at Kansas and Bristol the next two weeks. “What a great way to start the playoffs,” he said. Larson didn’t have the fastest car, just one that got out front at the right time while other contenders fell away. Denny Hamlin led a race-best 177 of 367 laps and looked headed for the win before he felt vibrations for what he told his crew was a loose wheel and had to pit on consecutive laps. Tyler Reddick led 90 laps, yet lost the lead to Larson coming off pit road. Kevin Harvick, seeking the first victory of his final season, challenged Harvick for the lead with less than 60 laps remaining, but was penalized when he could not avoid entering the pits moments after they were closed by NAS...
