49ers’ McCaffrey is simply ‘best in world at what he does’ SANTA CLARA — Christian McCaffrey’s lofty job title each week this season has been “NFL leading rusher.”He has a healthy disdain, however, for being pigeonholed into a specific role. Before he made McCaffrey’s 49ers debut last year against Kansas City, his father, Ed, was on the sideline pregame recalling how his son objected being labeled a “running back” or a “receiver,” that he simply wanted to be seen as an all-encompassing football player when he began playing as a kid.Reminded Thursday that some projected him as an “NFL slot receiver” coming out of Stanford, McCaffrey bristled at that memory. He also confirmed having a conversation with coach Kyle Shanahan, upon last year’s trade from Carolina, insisting he can handle a full-time load at running back.“That’s probably part of my insecurities and competitiveness. I want to be a complete back, and I think this dates back to when I was in middle school an...

It will be Wiggins’ first missed game of the season.Wiggins, 28, has mostly struggled this year, but had a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds in one of his best games of the year against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, a game in which Golden State squandered a 24-point lead and lost, 124-123.The injury leaves Golden State down three key players for Thursday and, perhaps, beyond.Chris Paul will sit out with a lower left leg nerve contusion suffered in Sacramento and Gary Payton II is expected to miss significant time with a calf injury. Payton came up limping to the locker room in the third quarter of Tuesday’s game. On Top of Everything Else, Henry Kissinger Prevented Peace in the Middle East U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem on Sept. 1, 1975.Photo: David Hume Kennerly/Getty ImagesThe encomiums have flowed voluminously for Henry Kissinger, and there have been some condemnations too. But even in the latter, little attention has been paid to his efforts to prevent peace from breaking out in the Mideast — efforts which helped cause the 1973 Arab–Israeli War and set in stone the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. This underappreciated aspect of Kissinger’s career adds tens of thousands of lives to his body count, which is in the millions.Kissinger, who died at 100 on Wednesday, served in the U.S. government from 1969 to 1977, during the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations. He began as Nixon’s national security adviser. Then, in Nixon’s second term, he was appointed secretary of state, a position he held on to after Ford became president following Nixon’s resignation. In June 1967, two years before the start of N...

What to know about the Sikh independence movement following US accusation that activist was targeted NEW DELHI (AP) — The U.S. has charged an Indian national in what prosecutors allege was a failed plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist at the behest of an unnamed Indian government official. The charges announced Wednesday against an Indian national arrested in June in Europe come two months after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were credible accusations that India may have been linked to the killing of a Sikh activist near Vancouver, straining relations between the two countries. The U.S. case is particularly sensitive given the high priority that President Joe Biden placed on improving ties with India and courting it to be a major partner in the push to counter China’s increasing assertiveness.India, which has banned the Sikh independence — or Khalistan — movement, denied having a role in the Canada killing and said it was examining information shared by the U.S. and taking those accusations seriously. Here are some details about the issue:WHAT IS THE KHALISTAN MOVE...

Ryan Blaney helps Roger Penske celebrate 1st back-to-back NASCAR championships in storied career NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The playoff beard had been shaved off well before fresh-faced Ryan Blaney arrived in Nashville to celebrate his first NASCAR championship. The coiffing was probably the smart move for the newest Team Penske champion, who at the same time became the first to drive for Roger Penske with a full beard — one that IndyCar teammate Josef Newgarden found befitting of “an 1800’s US president.”“I’ll tell you what, how Blaney gets away with that, I have no idea,” NASCAR teammate Joey Logano said Thursday. “The guts he’s got to even try — I don’t think anyone in our company has even tried to do that. So more kudos to him.”As fun as the beard was for Blaney, there was no way the boss was going to silently sit by if it still covered his face as Blaney collected his first Cup trophy Thursday night at the Music City Center in NASCAR’s annual season-ending awards ceremony. But just being able to race the final three months of the season with the bushy l...
