MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The San Diego Padres started small and had a big finish.Somewhere in there, they found a spark. The Padres used three Minnesota errors and savvy baserunning by Ha-Seong Kim and Fernando Tatis Jr. to score twice in the seventh inning on Tuesday, before Manny Machado broke the game open with a three-run homer in the ninth to beat the Twins 6-1 and give Michael Wacha his first win in five starts.Juan Soto had a season-high four hits — the most he’s had for San Diego — with two doubles and a walk for the Padres, who are 18-3 in games when they get three runs or more.“Just putting it all together. If we can do that we’re going to be the best team in baseball,” said Machado, who hit his fifth homer and made two hard-charging barehand scoops at third base to get groundball outs.Wacha (3-1) gave up just three hits and one run in six innings, before the Padres put together their strange tiebreaking seventh.Austin Nola’s sacrifice squeeze bunt scored Kim with the...Judge, Yankees beat A’s 10-5 despite 3 HRs by rookie Diaz

The 66-year-old Showalter, hired by the Mets before the 2022 season. was tossed by crew chief Mark Wegner.“It’s pretty obvious what it was,” Showalter said. “But It’s hard to imagine four guys not being able to see what happened. There’s about three ways you could get that play right. We had opportunities for it to not matter. We just didn’t pitch very well early on.”Bench coach Eric Chavez took over as manager.Lindor thought the play should have been subject to video review.“I ...Nuggets beat Suns 118-102 in Game 5 to regain series lead

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) -- A tough situation is getting even more difficult for several families displaced by a Christmas Eve fire in Aurora. Options have run out and now they must find new homes by May 17. A portion of the Shadow Tree Apartments was left with extensive damage after the fire, including the presence of exposed asbestos. Aurora Fire Rescue confirms the cause was accidental. The management placed the residents at a nearby hotel. “We can’t cook, we can’t eat, right. I go to work, come home and have to sit in one room,” said Moreen Luna, who is a grandmother. Withholding rent can complicate landlord disputes, but tenants have rights Another resident, Antoinette Casi, told FOX31 that in many cases, four children are living in one room. “The experience is horrible,” Casi said. The residents received notice that they must vacate the temporary housing and remove items from their apartments by May 17. There could be a light at the end of the tunnel for MBTA passengers, and not from a subway train that’s on fire.As the Herald reported, safety oversight of the T could fall under a new independent agency, if Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro gets his wish.Shapiro was responding to legislation filed by state Rep. William Straus that called for safety oversight to be moved to Shapiro’s office. The IG gave that idea a thumb’s down.Testifying Monday at a Joint Committee on Transportation hearing, Shapiro said that he instead favors moving this watchdog role from the Department of Public Utilities to a new independent agency “focused solely on safety of the MBTA.”Amen to that.MBTA safety is too big of a chronic problem for it to share bandwidth with other department functions. We’ve been through safety review panels, a blistering report from the Federal Transit Administration, apologies and promises.Through it all, riders have had to cope train derailments (one of...Enjoy seasonal sipping with frose cocktail

If you’re anything like me, you’ve done your best to blot out the COVID era from your memory. It doesn’t seem productive to ruminate on the days spent in fear and uncertainty – fear that public officials insisted should consume us; “hunkering down” in our homes; our children’s smiles hidden from us behind masks that even Dr. Anthony Fauci now appears to concede were (as applied) of nominal benefit. But the effects of our COVID response, which was in many cases destructive, still linger. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the realm of education. In parts of the country, some students lost a year (or more) of full-time in-person school. In certain cases, that was by choice; some parents worried that schools would be super-spreaders – they weren’t – and voluntarily kept them home. For other students, going to class in-person was simply not offered as an option.Frequent “exposure” quarantines that needlessly kept healthy kids at home for weeks at a time only made things worse.Learning lo...Latest news
