The connection between breweries and their regular customers can be as thick as the foam on a nice dark stout, so it’s not unusual for taproom managers to hire them on as bartenders – as Fiction Beer Co. did with Chris Belila, who took a part-time job there in 2017.Chris Belila owns and operates The Beer Bodega, which runs Fiction Beer Co.’s second taproom in Parker. (Fiction Beer Co.)That bond deepened further in early June when Belila opened a brewery in Parker in partnership with Fiction owners Ryan and Krista Kilpatrick. The new spot, at 19523 Hess Road, looks and feels like Fiction’s main location – down to its bar made of books. Labeled as Fiction Beer Co. Parker, it also shares the same beer and branding, but it’s owned and run by Belila.“We had been looking for a [second location],” Ryan Kilpatrick said. “We had our eye on Littleton, but the site we wanted was won over by another brand. The Parker location that Chris found fit the ideal for what we were interested in p...4 killed in fiery crash on 110 Freeway

A lavish, Greco-Roman temple tucked away in the Berkeley Hills is a little less grandiose after Christie’s auction house finalized sales this week of nearly $22 million worth of Tiffany lamps, classical paintings, artisanal textiles and other furnishings from the storied property.Acquired by Ann and Gordon Getty in 1994, the philanthropists’ home — known as the Temple of Wings — was ornately decorated with hundreds of artifacts that transformed the space into an ode to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This month, two separate online sales and a live auction Wednesday in New York City offered up 400 of those artifacts to the highest bidder. Christie’s staff spent more than a month at the Berkeley property, which was built in 1914 as a home and dance studio, loading furniture and artworks onto trucks destined for a Long Island warehouse to be individually reviewed and cataloged.“A Coign of Vantage,” a 1895 Romanticism painting by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, sold for ...Stanford’s Quinn Mathews opens up about his 156-pitch outing

It was all in the pursuit of greatness.Quinn Mathews wasn’t worried about what armchair pitching coaches might think when he took the ball for Stanford in the ninth inning against the University of Texas in the second of a three-game NCAA Super Regional series last Sunday. He recorded the final three outs, secured Stanford’s 8-3 win over the Longhorns and then did his best to ignore the rest: baseball pundits exploding in confusion after a college senior threw 156 pitches in a complete game effort. It was the second-most pitches thrown by a Division I player this year. No MLB pitcher has thrown that many pitches in a game since 1997.“It’s hard to justify to people,” Mathews said in a phone interview this week.Mathews called it a moment he’ll always remember. Stanford coach Davis Esquer defended the decision and said he’d never put Mathews in harm’s way. The Cardinals toppled the Longhorns in three games and are now preparing for a matchup against No. 1 Wake Forest in the third game of...East Bay radio host, entertainer to emcee Juneteenth featival
