DUNEDIN, New Zealand (AP) — Stefanie van der Gragt scored on a header in the 13th minute, leading the Netherlands to a 1-0 win over Portugal at the Women’s World Cup on Sunday as the 2019 finalists began their tournament run. The Dutch defender gathered herself as teammate Sherida Spitse lofted a corner kick her way, then headed the ball across the goal into the far side of the net. An offside review delayed the celebration. The goal by the 30-year-old van der Gragt, who plans to retire after the Women’s World Cup, was the quickest first goal of the tournament. The Dutch controlled the tempo of the game — Portugal’s first shot of the match didn’t come until the 82nd minute. The meeting with the Netherlands, ranked No. 9 in the world, marked Portugal’s first-ever tournament appearance. On hand were 11,991 spectators, who were sheltered from the rain inside Dunedin’s covered Forsyth Barr Stadium, known as the Glasshouse, which has a capacity of 25,947.Though most of the crowd app...

Rain delays start start of play on last day of 4th Ashes test

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 21:16:25 GMT

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Rain prevented play from starting on time on the last day of the fourth Ashes cricket test between England and Australia on Sunday. The weather forecast is bleak and it is possible that play will be washed out for the rest of the day.Only 30 overs were possible on Saturday, with plenty more rain forecast on what could be a frustrating final day at Old Trafford.Australia are more than happy to settle for a draw that would see them retain their 2-1 lead and the urn, meaning England will be forced to make the most of whatever windows of play are possible. They have already been frustrated by a 103-run stand between centurion Marnus Labuschagne and Mitch Marsh, but saw their prospects rise when Joe Root had the former caught behind. There is little margin for error after their 275-run first-innings lead was whittled down to 61 by the tourists, who will resume on 214-5.___AP cricket: https://apnews.com/hub/cricket and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsSource

Extreme Heat Ahead this Sunday

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 21:16:25 GMT

It sure is a very hot weekend following highs up to 97F in Miami and 98F in Marathon on Saturday, and Sunday could be even hotter. It’s all thanks to a continuation of a land breeze out of the southwest, which allows the air to heat up rapidly as it gets steered toward the east coast metro, while skies will be mostly sunny and filled with a layer of Saharan dust.As a result, Heat Advisories are posted for all of South Florida through this evening for feels-like temperatures up to 110F across the mainland and 112F across the Florida Keys.Aside from record heat being possible — if not likely — in both Miami and Marathon again today, Miami has a shot at reaching 98F, which is our forecast high. Most years never reach a temperature that high and the record for most days with a high of at least 98F is 2 days, which happened in back-to-back years of 2019 and 2020!The heat will remain relentless into our Monday and Tuesday, too, with highs remaining in the mid to upper 90s...

Summer Sun & Heat

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 21:16:25 GMT

After a gorgeous day yesterday, we’ll do it again today! This really is our first full nice weekend since Memorial Day, so we’re due for this. Sunshine will be out in full force today with temperatures climbing to the 80s. There’s not much wind, so not enough to hold off the sea breeze. It’s not a straight push of east wind so it’ll take time for the onshore wind to kick in. If you’re on the coast you’ll probably make a quick jump to the low 80s then settle back to the 70s once the sea breeze sets in later today.Yesterday was a great beach day and today will be a repeat of it. South of Cape Ann, water temperatures are really making some nice ground, especially in Buzzard’s Bay and Nantucket Sound where buoys are reporting water temperatures well into the 70s! Rip current risk is low today and waves are only about 2-3 feet. Enjoy!Tomorrow will be another summer gem! Sun is back to kick off the work week and temperatures will be a few de...
